Zadina began playing professional in his native Czech Republic as a 17-year-old in 2016-17 but took his game to another level the following season when the left-shooting right wing joined Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League the following season.
He scored 44 goals in 57 games and led QMJHL rookies with 82 points. He was named to the league's First All-Star Team and won the Michael Bossy Trophy as the best pro prospect in the QMJHL.
The Detroit Red Wings selected Zadina with the No. 6 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft and he began the 2018-19 season with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. He scored 15 goals in 45 games and earned a chance to make his NHL debut with the Red Wings on Feb. 24, 2019, against the San Jose Sharks. He scored his first goal in his fourth game, against the Colorado Avalanche on March 5, 2019.
Zadina finished 2018-19 with Grand Rapids, and began 2019-20 there as well. But he scored 13 points (seven goals, six assists) in 19 games and was recalled before Thanksgiving, and began to show the Red Wings that he could be a top-six NHL forward. He had his first three-point game (one goal, two assists) against the Winnipeg Jets on Dec. 12, 2019, and scored two goals in a game for the first time against the Minnesota Wild on Jan. 22, 2020. A fractured ankle in early February ended his season after he scored 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 28 games.
