Selected by the Blue Jackets in the fourth round (No. 117) of the 2017 NHL Draft, Bemstrom played two seasons in his native Sweden before his arrival in North America.
He scored 23 goals for DjurgÂrdens IF in 2018-19, the third-most by a teenager in the Swedish Hockey League. He was named Rookie of the Year and was also the recipient of the Hakan Loob Trophy, given to the player who scores the most goals during the SHL regular season.
Bemstrom signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Columbus on May 15, 2019. He played his first 15 NHL games without a goal but ended the scoring drought against the Arizona Coyotes on Nov. 7, 2019.
Bemstrom was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Feb. 22, 2024, for Alex Nylander and a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
He is the son of forward Jorgen Bemstrom, who played in Sweden from 1992-2009.
