Buchberger carved out a long NHL career as a checking forward who provided teams with a physical presence and was part of Stanley Cup championship teams with the Edmonton Oilers in 1987 and 1990.
Born in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, Buchberger was selected by the Oilers in the ninth round (No. 188) of the 1985 NHL Draft. He was chosen after his first season with Moose Jaw of the Western Hockey League. The Oilers sent him back to Moose Jaw for the 1985-86 season, and he spent 1986-87 with Nova Scotia of the American Hockey League before making his NHL debut May 17, 1987, against the Philadelphia Flyers, in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Buchberger was scoreless in three games but got his name on the Cup for the first time when the Oilers won Game 7 for their third championship in four years.
Buchberger scored his first NHL goal Jan. 19, 1988, against the Quebec Nordiques. It was his only goal in 19 regular-season games, and he didn't dress for the playoffs when the Oilers repeated as champions. By 1989-90, he was seeing regular action and contributed five assists in 19 playoff games, helping the Oilers win the Cup for the fifth time in seven years.
Two years later, Buchberger had by far his best offensive season in the NHL, scoring 20 goals and 44 points, each an NHL career high, in 79 games. The Oilers named him captain before the 1995-96 season, an honor he held for four seasons until he was selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 1999 NHL Expansion Draft.
Buchberger was the Thrashers' first captain, though the honor didn't last long; he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings on March 13, 2000. He played for the Kings through the 2001-02 season, then played one season each with the Phoenix Coyotes and Pittsburgh Penguins before leaving the NHL in 2004 with 309 points (105 goals, 204 assists) in 1,182 games and 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) in 97 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
After his retirement, Buchberger returned to the Oilers in a variety of roles and was also an NHL assistant with the New York Islanders and coached Tri-City of the WHL.
