Big centers who can check and play defense are always in demand in the NHL, and Schaller (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) has the kind of size and defensive skills teams like.
Schaller was undrafted and spent four seasons at Providence College, earning Hockey East Defensive Forward of the Year honors in 2012-13 before signing as a free agent with the Buffalo Sabres. He spent most of the next two seasons with Rochester of the American Hockey League, but did get called up during the 2014-15 season and made his NHL debut with the Sabres on Nov. 29, 2014. Schaller scored his first NHL goal for Buffalo on Dec. 21, 2014.
After splitting the 2015-16 season between the Sabres and Rochester, Schaller signed with the Boston Bruins as a free agent on July 1, 2016. He had 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 59 games, then improved on those numbers in 2017-18. Schaller isn't flashy, but he's settled in on Boston's fourth line and provides some offense and showed that he can move up in the lineup when needed.
