As Perreault's career has shown, draft position should not be the final indicator of how far a player can go in the NHL.
Selected by the Washington Capitals in the sixth round (No. 177) in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Drummondville, Quebec, native and 2006-07 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League MVP is a versatile forward whose quickness, playmaking skills and tenacity more than make up for his lack of size. A 5-foot-10, 188-pound center capable of playing on either wing, Perreault is a skilled face-off man.
Perreault made his NHL debut on Nov. 4, 2009 and assisted on both Capitals goals in a 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Three days later, Perreault scored his first NHL goal in a 7-4 win against the Florida Panthers, part of a run that saw him score two goals and six points in his first eight NHL games.
In his first full season in the NHL in 2011-12, Perreault finished tied for fifth on the Capitals with 16 goals and led them with a 26.7 percent shooting percentage. On Jan. 24, 2012, Perreault had his first NHL hat trick, including the game-winning goal, as Washington defeated the Boston Bruins 5-3. Perreault made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut in 2012, playing in four games of Washington's seven-game first-round series win against the Bruins.
A year later, Perreault played in all seven of the Capitals' playoff games. He had an assist for his first playoff point in the NHL as Washington opened its first-round series with a 3-1 win against the New York Rangers. Perreault scored his first playoff goal in Game 4 on May 8, 2013, and had an assist for his first multipoint postseason game in the NHL.
Before the 2013-14 season, Washington traded Perreault to the Anaheim Ducks. He responded by leading Ducks centers with a 52.7 percent success rate on face-offs while finishing fifth on Anaheim in goals and fourth in points. Back in the playoffs for a third straight season, Perreault had two goals and five points in 11 games, including the game-winning goal and an assist in Anaheim's 6-2 win in Game 5 of the first round against the Dallas Stars.
Perreault seemed to find a permanent home after signing a three-year contract with the Jets as a free agent before the 2014-15 season. He had four goals on Jan. 13, 2015, against the Panthers -- the first four-goal game by a Jets player since the franchise relocated to Winnipeg for the 2011-12 season -- and signed a four-year contract extension with Winnipeg on July 2, 2016.
