The Kitchener, Ontario-born Wideman has carved out a long career for a player who was selected in the eighth round (No. 241) of the 2002 NHL Draft.
A 69-point season in 2001-2002 in 65 games with London of the Ontario Hockey League convinced the Buffalo Sabres to pick him. But Wideman never played for Buffalo, and would sign with the St. Louis Blues as a free agent on June 30, 2004.
After 122 games with the Blues over parts of two seasons, he was traded to the Boston Bruins on Feb. 27, 2007, and played with them for three-plus seasons. Stints with the Florida Panthers and Washington Capitals followed before Wideman was traded to the Flames on June 27, 2012.
During his third season in Calgary (2014-15), he produced in a big way, with 15 goals and 56 points in 80 games, helping the Flames make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in six seasons. Wideman then had seven points - all assists - in 11 playoff games.
