Desjardins is known for his work ethic and it has served him well, because getting noticed by an NHL team proved difficult.
Selected in the 15th round by Sault Ste. Marie in the 2002 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection Draft, Desjardins was a long shot to play major junior hockey, let alone forge an NHL career. Bringing energy, physicality, determination and defensive responsibility to the ice, Desjardins played four seasons with Sault Ste. Marie, never scoring more than 17 goals in an OHL season.
Passed over in the NHL Draft, Desjardins signed with Laredo of the Central Hockey League and had a solid 2007-08 season (22 goals, 59 points, plus-21 in 64 games). That earned him a look the following season with Phoenix of the East Coast Hockey League, but after five games there he jumped up to Worcester, the San Jose Sharks' American Hockey League affiliate.
Desjardins scored eight goals and 22 points in 74 games for Worcester and had four goals in 12 Calder Cup Playoff games that spring. The Sharks invited him to training camp in 2009, but he spent 2009-10 with Worcester, where he had 19 goals and 46 points in 80 games. The Sharks signed him as a free agent June 26, 2010.
Desjardins remained with Worcester to start 2010-11 and made his NHL debut Jan. 3, 2011, for San Jose against the Vancouver Canucks. He scored his first NHL goal March 23, 2011, against the Calgary Flames.
Playing 17 games for San Jose that season, he proved to be a solid checking presence and provided a spark for the Sharks penalty kill. Desjardins made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut May 20, 2011, in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final against Vancouver, scoring his first playoff goal two nights later in Game 4.
The gritty forward led the Sharks in penalty minutes in 2012-13 (61) and 2013-14 (86). On March 2, 2015, San Jose traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks for Ben Smith. Desjardins had a goal and three assists in 21 playoff games that season as Chicago won the Stanley Cup.
