John Leonard was chosen by the San Jose Sharks in the sixth round (No. 182) of the 2018 NHL Draft after going undrafted in 2016 and 2017.
Leonard played three seasons at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. As a sophomore in 2018-19 he scored 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) in 40 games to help UMass advance to the NCAA championship game, a 3-0 loss to Minnesota Duluth. As a junior in 2019-20, he led the NCAA with 27 goals to set a UMass Division I single-season record and become a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award given to the top men's player in NCAA Division I ice hockey.
Leonard scored 105 points (56 goals, 49 assists) in 106 NCAA games. He is the sixth UMass player to score at least 50 goals and 100 points, and the first since the program moved to Division I to do so in three seasons.
He had two assists in his NHL debut, Jan. 14, 2021, playing on a line with Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl during a 4-3 shootout win against the Arizona Coyotes, and led Sharks rookies with 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in 44 games.
