Akil Thomas secured his short-term future with the Los Angeles Kings organization when the pending restricted free agent signed a two-year, $1,550,000 contract (average annual value of $775,000) on June 6, 2024.
He played most of his age 24 season for Ontario in the American Hockey League, made his NHL debut at the Winnipeg Jets on April 1, 2024, and had three goals and an assist in seven games, scoring his first NHL goal in his second game at the San Jose Sharks on April 4. Thomas got his third goal against the Calgary Flames on April 11 to become the fifth different skater in Kings history to score at least three in the first five games of his NHL career and first since Brian Boyle from Feb. 2-10, 2008.
Thomas set AHL career highs in goals (22), assists (24) and points (46) in 64 games for Ontario in 2023-24. His nine game-winning goals were second in the league behind teammate Samuel Fagemo and he had five points (two goals, three assists) in eight Calder Cup Playoff games. The second-round pick (No. 51) by the Kings in the 2018 NHL Draft played four seasons with Peterborough and Niagara in the Ontario Hockey League. He's represented Canada at three IIHF events including the 2020 World Junior Championship, where his game-winner against Russia earned his country a gold medal.
