Drake Batherson, a forward selected by the Ottawa Senators in the fourth round (No. 121) of the 2017 NHL Draft, made his NHL debut with Ottawa in 2018-19 after beginning the season with Belleville of the American Hockey League.
He scored 62 points (22 goals, 40 assists) in 59 games with Belleville, setting a franchise record for points by a rookie that still stands, and had nine points (three goals, six assists) in 20 games with Ottawa. He also was named MVP of the 2019 AHL All-Star Challenge after scoring five goals.
Batherson established himself as a full-time NHL player in 2020-21, scoring 34 points (17 goals, 17 assists) in 56 games. He followed that with 44 points (17 goals, 27 assists) in 46 games in 2021-22. That season, he would be selected to participate in his first NHL All-Star Game, but would be unable to attend due to injury. He reached the 60-point mark for the first time in 2022-23, when he had 62 points (22 goals, 40 assists) in all 82 games.
Batherson continued to improve offensively in 2023-24, setting NHL career highs with 28 goals and 66 points in 82 games. He followed that with another career season in 2024-25, scoring 68 points (26 goals, 42 assists) in 82 games and establishing a career high with 31 power-play points. He also made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut, scoring two points (one goal, one assist) in six games against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Batherson had yet another career year in 2025-26, scoring 71 points (33 goals, 38 assists) in 79 games. With the campaign, Batherson improved on his previous season’s point total for eight consecutive seasons, tying Vic Stasiuk for the most consecutive seasons improving his point total in NHL history. In the playoffs, he added three goals and an assist in four games as the Senators were swept by the Carolina Hurricanes.
Batherson was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, while his father Norm was playing professional hockey for the Fort Wayne Komets of the IHL. Batherson was primarily raised in New Minas, Nova Scotia, but also spent parts of his early childhood in Germany as his father continued his professional career overseas. His sister, Mae, plays for the Minnesota Frost of the PWHL.
He began his major junior career with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League after they selected him in the sixth round (No. 97) of the 2015 QMJHL Draft. After being dealt to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in 2018, Batherson led the QMJHL in points during the 2018 playoffs, scoring 13 goals and 20 assists in 22 games. He finished his QMJHL career with in 51 goals and 135 points in 122 regular season games.
