Kovacevic parlayed an opportunity with the New Jersey Devils into a five-year, $20 million contract ($4 million average annual value) he signed March 7, 2025.
The Devils acquired Kovacevic in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens on June 30, 2024, for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. He had NHL career highs in assists (13) and penalty minutes (49), and his plus-11 was tied his NHL career high, at the time of the signing.
It took time for Kovacevic to find his rhythm at hockey's highest level. He was chosen by the Winnipeg Jets in the third round (No. 74) of the 2017 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut Jan. 27, 2022.
