The son of retired NHL forward Keith Primeau was born in Farmington Hills, Michigan, where his family kept their offseason home when Keith played for the Detroit Red Wings.
At 23 years old, Cayden Primeau signed a three-year, $2.67 million contract with the Montreal Canadiens as a restricted free agent Sept. 8, 2022. The goalie was 1-7-1 with a 4.62 goals-against average and .868 save percentage in 12 games (nine starts) for Montreal the prior season, 16-12-5 with a 2.94 GAA, .909 save percentage and two shutouts in 33 games for Laval of the American Hockey League, and 9-5 with a 2.17 GAA and .936 save percentage in 14 AHL playoff games.
After going 21-2-2 with a 1.96 GAA, .927 save percentage and two shutouts in 26 games for Laval, Primeau was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes on June 30, 2025.
Primeau won 19 games as a freshman at Northeastern in 2017-18 and was named to the All-Hockey East Rookie Team. He won a program record 25 games as a sophomore, earning most valuable player honors after Northeastern won their third Hockey East tournament. He then left college by signing an entry-level contract with the Canadiens on March 21, 2019.
