Liljegren signed a two-year, $6 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on June 30, 2024, choosing to stay with the team that selected him in the first round (No. 17) of the 2017 NHL Draft, instead of becoming a restricted free agent. He was traded to the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 30 and sent to the Washington Capitals on March 6, 2026.
The prior season, Liljegren had what was an NHL career-high 20 assists and tied his NHL career high with 23 points in 55 regular-season games. He also had one assist in six Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Liljegren debuted for Rogle in the Swedish Hockey League on Dec. 3, 2015. He moved on to Toronto in the American Hockey League, where in 2017-18 he had 17 points (one goal, 16 assists) in 44 regular-season games and four assists in 20 Calder Cup Playoff games to help the Marlies win the Calder Cup.
Less than two years later, Liljegren debuted with the Maple Leafs, a 6-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 18, 2020. He scored his first NHL goal in the second period of a 6-5 win at the St. Louis Blues on Jan. 15, 2022.
He also played for his native Sweden at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship (one goal, one assist in seven games), winning a silver medal.
