Skinner filled a need for the Oilers as the backup to free agent acquisition Jack Campbell to start the 2022-23 season after Mike Smith was placed on long-term injured reserve and Mikko Koskinen signed with Lugano in Switzerland. He proved himself capable enough to earn a three-year, $7.8 million contract Dec. 19, 2022, and participate in the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend. He led goalies in wins (29) and games (50) and was third in save percentage (.914) and fifth in goals-against average (2.75) among rookies to play at least 10 games and was named a finalist for the Calder Trophy, given annually to the best rookie in the NHL as voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Edmonton's third-round pick (No. 78) in the 2017 NHL Draft worked his way up the pipeline after helping Swift Current win the 2018 Western Hockey League championship, playing for Bakersfield of the American Hockey League and 13 NHL games in 2021-22. He made 33 saves to earn his first NHL win in an 8-5 win against the Ottawa Senators on Jan. 31, 2021, and defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-0 on Feb. 14, 2022 in his 14th NHL game to set an Oilers record for fewest needed to earn his first shutout.
Skinner made 22 saves for his first Stanley Cup Playoff victory, 4-2 against the Los Angeles Kings in Game 2 of the 2023 Western Conference First Round, becoming the third rookie goalie in Oilers history to win a playoff game, joining Andy Moog (1981) and Grant Fuhr (1982). He made 27 saves to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 on Jan. 23, 2024, and to set the Oilers record with his 11th straight win, passing Fuhr (1985-86).
He was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2025, after helping the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Final the prior two seasons.
Skinner played four seasons in the Western Hockey League from 2013-18 for Lethbridge and Swift Current, winning a championship with the latter with a 2.20 goals-against average, .932 save percentage and six shutouts. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Oilers on May 15, 2018.
Skinner comes from a family of nine children, each of their first names starting with the letter 'S' (Samantha, Shannon, Sharon, Sandra, Sarah, Sheldon, Scott, Stephen).
