When Damon Severson was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets by the New Jersey Devils on June 9 after signing an eight-year, $50 million contract with New Jersey, it ended the defenseman's nine-season career with the Devils, the longest tenured at the time of the deal. He had 33 points (seven goals, 26 assists) in 82 games for the Devils in 2022-23 and three points (one goal, two assists) in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Selected by the Devils in the second round (No. 60) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Severson signed a three-year, entry-level contract Sept. 6, 2012. He played in the Western Hockey League in 2012-13 and led Kelowna defensemen with 42 assists and 52 points. In 2013-14, he scored 61 points (15 goals, 46 assists) and was plus-47 in 64 games.

Severson made his NHL debut Oct. 9, 2014 and finished his first NHL season with 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) in 51 games. With multipoint games against the Florida Panthers (Oct. 11) and the Ottawa Senators (Oct. 25), Severson became the first defenseman in Devils history to have three multipoint games in his first eight NHL games.

The Brandon, Manitoba native led Devils defensemen in points (21) and assists (20) while averaging 18:10 of ice time per game in 2015-16. He scored 21 points (one goal, 20 assists) in 72 games.

The Devils signed Severson to a six-year contract with an average annual value of $4,166,700 on Sept. 11, 2017 after he scored 31 points (three goals, 28 assists) in 80 games.

In 2018-19, Severson set what was NHL career highs in goals (11) and points (39) and played in all 82 games. He had 31 points (eight goals, 23 assists) in 69 games when the 2019-20 season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. He exceeded those totals in assists (35) and points (46) in 2021-22.
