Murray enjoyed a magical ride under the brightest of spotlights at the beginning of his NHL career.
Having played just 13 regular-season NHL games, Murray stepped into the starting goalie role for the injured Marc-Andre Fleury and helped lead the Penguins to the Stanley Cup in 2016.
Drafted by the Penguins in the third round (No. 83) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Murray showed steady improvement with Sault Ste. Marie in the Ontario Hockey League. In his three seasons as the starter, Murray saw his goals-against average drop from 4.08 to 2.57, while his save percentage improved from .876 to .921.
With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the American Hockey League in the 2014-15 season, Murray had a 25-10-3 record, a 1.58 goals-against average and .941 save percentage in 40 games.
Murray won the Bastien Memorial Award as the best goaltender in the AHL for 2014-15 after setting a league rookie record with 12 shutouts. He also set an AHL record for the longest shutout streak (304:11) and won the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the league's rookie of the year.
Murray started the 2015-16 season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton but was called up and played his first NHL game Dec. 19, 2015, against the Carolina Hurricanes. He got his first win two days later, against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He played two more games in December, four games in March and started all five of the Penguins' games in April leading up to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Murray, who turned 22 during the playoffs, earned Conn Smythe Trophy consideration with a 15-6 record, 2.08 GAA and .923 save percentage in 21 games.
Murray went 32-10-4 in 49 games (47 starts) with a 2.41 GAA, .923 save percentage and four shutouts in 2016-17 and was set to start Game 1 of the playoffs against the Blue Jackets on April 12 but was injured in warmups. Fleury stepped in and helped the Penguins reach the Eastern Conference Final against the Ottawa Senators. Murray replaced Fleury in Game 3 and helped spark the Penguins to a second straight championship. He shut out the Nashville Predators in Games 5 and 6 did not allow a goal in the final 146:52 in the six-game Final.
On October 7, 2020, Murray was traded to the Senators. Murray played a total of 47 games over two seasons for the Senators before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 11, 2022.
Murray signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Seattle Kraken on July 1, 2025.
