One of the most rewarding transactions in the history of the Nashville Predators came on April 3, 2013, when they traded forwards Martin Erat and Michael Latta to the Washington Capitals for Forsberg.
The Capitals had selected Forsberg, a forward from Sweden, with the No. 11 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft. He helped Sweden finish second at the 2011 IIHF World Under-18 Championship and led Leksand's junior team with 21 goals and 40 points in 2010-11.
As captain he helped Sweden win silver at the 2012 IIHF Under-18 World Championship and was named the tournament's best forward after tying for second with five goals. He also helped Sweden win the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Forsberg won the 2013 Golden Cage Award as the Allsvenskan top junior player and had five points in six games to help Sweden win the 2013 World Junior Championship, where he was named to the tournament all-star team.
He joined the Predators following the end of the Swedish Hockey League season, making his NHL debut against the Detroit Red Wings on April 14, 2013. He got his first NHL point, an assist, nine days later against the Calgary Flames.
Forsberg scored his first NHL goal Oct. 8, 2013, against the Minnesota Wild. He played 47 games for Milwaukee of the American Hockey League that season, tying for the team lead in power-play goals (seven) and finishing second in points per game (.72). He was captain as Sweden won a silver medal at the 2014 World Junior Championship, where he was second in scoring with 12 points. Forsberg became the first Swede to be named MVP of the tournament.
He finished fourth in voting for Calder Trophy in 2014-15 and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team after leading the Predators in goals (26) and points (63). Forsberg scored two goals in the NHL All-Star Game, becoming the first player in Predators history to score in the game. Also that season, he got the first Stanley Cup Playoff hat trick by a Nashville player, against the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 5 of the Western Conference First Round.
In 2015-16 Forsberg had two natural hat tricks in a span of three games -- Feb. 23, 2016, against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Feb. 27, 2016, against the St. Louis Blues -- becoming the first NHL player to do so in three or fewer games since Petri Skriko did it in consecutive games in 1986 for the Vancouver Canucks. He finished with 33 goals.
Forsberg scored 31 goals and finished with 58 points in 2016-17, then had 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 22 postseason games as the Predators advanced to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since entering the NHL in 1998. He finished with 64 points (26 goals, 38 assists) in 67 games in 2017-18, helping Nashville win the Presidents' Trophy for the first time.
Forsberg passed David Legwand as the leading goal scorer in Predators history with No. 211 in a 6-3 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 19, 2022. He signed an eight-year, $68 million contract on July 11, coming off a 42-goal and 84-point season, and became the third player to reach 500 points for Nashville (Roman Josi, Legwand) with a hat trick in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Dec. 31.
Forsberg played for Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off and was named to Team Sweden's roster for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. He scored 48 goals in 2023-24 to break Matt Duchene's Predators record of 43 set in 2021-22 and his own team record with seven consecutive games scoring a goal from March 13-28. His 29 multipoint and 10 multigoal games also broke franchise records set by Roman Josi (26) and Duchene (nine) in 2021-22.
