Ceci was able to spend more than a decade pursuing his hockey dreams close to home.
Born and raised in the Ottawa suburb of Orleans, Ontario, Ceci played four years with Ottawa of the Ontario Hockey League, then was chosen by the Ottawa Senators in the first round (No. 15) in the 2012 NHL Draft.
In the OHL, Ceci played four years and finished with 41 goals and 146 points in 238 games. In his final season, 2012-13, he spent time with Ottawa and the OHL's Owen Sound Attack (eight goals, 24 points) and Binghamton of the American Hockey League.
Ceci began the 2013-14 season with Binghamton of the American Hockey League before making his NHL debut Dec. 12, 2013, in a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. He scored his first NHL goal Dec. 16, 2013, in overtime ofa 3-2 victory against the St. Louis Blues.
The 6-foot-2 defenseman played 49 games as a rookie, enough to convince the Senators to give him a place among the top six the following season. As a kid, Ceci remembered waking up Christmas morning and experienced the joy of finding Senators game tickets in his stocking. Fe'd been given a chance not only to wear the jersey he'd grown up idolizing, but be a mainstay on the team.
A promising first full season in 2014-15 led to a solid 2015-16 season. Ceci played 81 games, scored five goals, finished with 21 points and led Ottawa with 113 blocked shots.
The 2015-16 season continued to showcase Ceci's progression. He finished with 10 goals, including two game-winners, 26 points and 130 blocked shots.
Ceci remained a regular with the Senators through the 2018-19 season. On July 1, 2019, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played one season with Toronto and one with the Pittsburgh Penguins before signing a four-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers on July 28, 2021. After three seasons, he was again traded to the San Jose Sharks on Aug. 18, 2024, and then to the Dallas Stars by San Jose with Mikael Granlund for a first-round pick and conditional third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Ceci signed a 4-year, $18 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings on July 1, 2025.
