Seeking a career in the NHL, Zemgus Girgensons left his native Latvia to play junior hockey in the United States with Green Mountain of the Eastern Junior Hockey League, where he had 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) in 23 games in 2009-10.
Girgensons then joined Dubuque of the United States Hockey League the following season, scoring 21 goals and getting 49 points in 51 regular-season games before added eight points (three goals, five assists) in 11 playoff games to help Dubuque win the Clark Cup Trophy as USHL champions. In 2011-12, Girgensons led Dubuque in scoring with 55 points (24 goals, 31 assists) in 49 games.
That caught the attention of the Buffalo Sabres, who selected Girgensons with the No. 14 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, the highest a Latvia-born player had ever been picked.
Girgensons played his first professional season with Rochester of the American Hockey League before making his NHL debut on Oct. 2, 2013, scoring Buffalo's lone goal in a 2-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
As a rookie in 2013-14, Girgensons finished with 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in 70 games. He followed that up the following season with 30 points (15 goals, 15 assists) in 61 games, and was named to the 2015 NHL All-Star Game after garnering a League-high 1,574,896 votes.
In each of the following four seasons, Girgensons established himself in the Sabres' bottom-six forwards and became a stalwart on their penalty kill, leading Buffalo forwards in time on ice while shorthanded in 2018-19 and 2019-20, when he scored 12 goals before the season was paused on March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
Girgensons signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract to stay with the Sabres on June 20, 2023, in lieu of becoming an unrestricted free agent. He was the longest tenured member of the team at that time with 625 games played over 10 seasons. That tenure ended when he signed a three-year, $2.55 contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1, 2024.
Girgensons was named to Team Latvia's roster for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
