Rieder, a speedy forward, was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round (No. 114) of the 2011 NHL Draft, but was traded by the Oilers to the Arizona Coyotes for Kale Kissy on March 29, 2013.
Born in Landshut, Germany, Rieder played for his hometown team, EV Landshut, before moving to Kitchener of the Ontario Hockey League for the 2010-11 season. He scored 23 goals as an OHL rookie, ranking fifth on Kitchener, then had a spectacular 2011-12 season, leading his team with 42 goals and 85 points.
Rieder had 27 goals and 56 points in 2012-13 to lead Kitchener in scoring for the second straight season. He also led Kitchener in playoff assists (10) and was tied for the lead in points (12).
In his first pro season (2013-14), with Portland of the American Hockey League, Rieder had 28 goals and 48 points in 64 games. He scored two goals in his pro debut, Oct. 9, 2013, against Manchester.
Rieder started the 2014-15 season with Portland and was called up by the Coyotes on Nov. 2, 2014. He scored his first NHL goal against the Washington Capitals that night in his debut.
Rieder scored two shorthanded goals in 58 seconds Dec. 1, 2014 against the Oilers, becoming the first rookie and the second player in franchise history to score two shorthanded goals in a game, joining Keith Tkachuk (April 7, 1995). At the time, they were also the fastest two shorthanded goals ever scored by an NHL rookie.
He finished with 13 goals, including three shorthanded goals, which led the Coyotes and was tops among NHL rookies. He tied for second on the Coyotes and ranked fourth among NHL rookies with 189 shots.
Rieder scored 14 goals in 2015-16, then was selected to play for Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey 2016. He followed that with 16 goals in 2016-17.
The Coyotes traded Rieder to the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 21, 2018, and he helped the Kings qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Oilers, looking for depth scoring, signed him to a one-year contract on July 1, 2018.
