Mersch took after his father in becoming a pro hockey player, but did not get to share his success with his dad.
Michael Mersch Sr., who played in the International Hockey League, died when his namesake was in the second grade. It is a motivating factor for Mersch, a forward who loves to use his left-handed shot and force himself into crowded ice in front of the net.
Selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round (No. 110) in the 2011 NHL Draft, the Park Ridge, Ill., native was called up by the Kings from Ontario of the American Hockey League to make his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 11, 2015. Mersch had two shots and three hits over 11:01 of ice time in the Kings' 3-2 shootout victory.
He got his first NHL point with a goal in a 5-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 29, 2015, in his ninth NHL game. An assist two nights later against the Calgary Flames gave Mersch his first NHL scoring streak. He finished the 2015-16 season with a goal and three points in 17 games with the Kings.
His arrival in the NHL came after just one full season as a professional, but one that showed a lot of promise. In 2014-15 Mersch scored 22 goals and 45 points while being one of only two players to appear in all 76 games for Manchester, L.A.'s then-AHL affiliate.
Among AHL rookies he was tied for second in goals and tied for seventh in points. In the 2015 AHL playoffs, Mersch tied for the scoring lead with 22 points (13 goals) in 18 games and helped Manchester win the Calder Cup.
Having moved to the Kings' new affiliate for 2015-16, he finished his second season as a pro first on Ontario with 24 goals and his 43 points in 52 games ranked third on the team. Prior to turning pro, Mersch played four seasons at the University of Wisconsin, where he had 115 points in 157 games and was an All-Big Ten First Team selection in 2013-14.
