Archibald was among a host of players who stepped in and played small but important roles for the Pittsburgh Penguins in their second straight run to the Stanley Cup in 2017.
The son of former Minnesota North Stars forward Jim Archibald was a star at Brainerd High School in Minnesota and a finalist for the Minnesota Mr. Hockey Award in 2011. He played three seasons at the University of Nebraska Omaha, where he scored 29 goals as a junior in 2013-14 and had two assists in six games for the United States at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship.
The Penguins, who selected him in the sixth round (No. 174) of the 2011 NHL Draft, signed Archibald after his college season ended. After two seasons in the minors, Archibald made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh on March 5, 2016 against the Calgary Flames.
He began the 2016-17 season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. But with the Penguins hit hard by injuries, Archibald was called up Feb. 10, 2017 and scored two goals in his first game against the Arizona Coyotes on Feb. 11. He finished with three goals in 10 games.
Archibald played four games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs without scoring, but his appearance in Game 4 of the Final against the Nashville Predators was enough to get his name on the Cup.
Archibald was traded by the Penguins to the Arizona Coyotes on Dec. 19, 2017. After Archibald had 33 points (17 goals, 16 assists) in 107 games for the Coyotes, he became a free agent and signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers on July 16, 2019. On March 6, 2020, he signed a two-year contract.
