Selected by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round (No. 201) of the 2007 NHL Draft, Braun was a late-round pick who has developed into a steady, stay-at-home defenseman.
After playing high school hockey in his home state of Minnesota, Braun played for Green Bay of the United States Hockey League before scoring 88 points (23 goals, 65 assists) in four seasons at the University of Massachusetts. Braun signed an entry-level contract with the Sharks on March 24, 2010, reporting to San Jose's American Hockey League affiliate in Worcester, Massachusetts. He made his pro debut a memorable one, with three assists against Hartford on April 7, 2010.

With his solid all-around play, hard shot from the point and ability to play big minutes, it didn't take Braun long to impress, and on Nov. 24, 2010 he was called up to the Sharks. He made his NHL debut Nov. 26, 2010 against the Vancouver Canucks. One night later, Braun played 22:48 against the Edmonton Oilers and had two assists for his first NHL points. On Dec. 2, 2010, he scored his first NHL goal in a 4-0 win against the Ottawa Senators.
Braun quickly became a reliable presence on defense. He was second on the Sharks in average ice time per game (20:59) in 2013-14 and tied for second among defensemen with 23 points (one goal, 22 assists) in 2014-15.
When the Sharks made their first Stanley Cup Final in 2015-16, Braun was his usual stalwart self. He scored both his playoff goals during the Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In Game 2, Braun's third-period goal forced overtime and in Game 3, his first-period goal tied it 1-1.
Braun's best offensive season in the NHL came in 2017-18, when he had 33 points (five goals, 28 assists) in 81 games. He was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers on June 18, 2019.
Braun returned to the Flyers on a one-year contract July 13, 2022 after splitting the 2021-22 season with Philadelphia and the New York Rangers. He had two assists in 51 games, announcing after a 5-4 overtime win against the Chicago Blackhawks on April 13, 2023, it was his last game. The 36-year-old finished with 199 points (34 goals, 165 assists) in 842 regular-season games for the Flyers, Rangers and Sharks. He had 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 119 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
