A seventh-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs (No. 216) in the 2005 NHL Draft, Stralman split time between the American Hockey League and the NHL his first two seasons after coming from his native Sweden.
Before the 2009-10 season, Stralman was traded twice. First Toronto traded him to the Calgary Flames on July 27. Two months later, during training camp, Calgary sent him to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
His first season with Columbus appeared to be his breakthrough when he scored six goals and 34 points in 73 games. But he had health issues and could not stay in the lineup the next season.
Stralman had asthma, but doctors were unable to pinpoint why he was having fevers and other difficulties. He was limited to 51 games that season, his last with Columbus, and his contract was not extended.
After an unsuccessful tryout with the New Jersey Devils, Stralman, still dealing with health problems, thought his days in the NHL might have been over. But he was contacted by the New York Rangers, who directed him to a specialist. It was determined that Stralman had scarring in his lungs because of asthma-related symptoms, which were causing the fevers. He was put on antibiotics and his career began to turn around with the Rangers, who signed him Nov. 3, 2011.
While with the Rangers, Stralman became an integral part of one of the top teams in the NHL, helping New York reach the Eastern Conference Final in 2012 and the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.
An unrestricted free agent, Stralman signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1, 2014. He teamed with countryman Victor Hedman on defense and returned to the Cup Final in 2015. He scored his 200th NHL point Feb. 21, 2017 and played his 600th NHL game two days later.
After five seasons with the Lightning, Stralman signed a three-year contract with the Florida Panthers on July 1, 2019.
On July 26, 2021, the Panthers traded Stralman to the Arizona Coyotes for a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.
Stralman signed a one-year contract with the Boston Bruins on Oct. 12, 2022. He was in training camp on a professional tryout contract.
