No one has played more games in an Ottawa Senators sweater than Phillips, a stay-at-home defenseman who dressed for 1,179 games from 1997-98 through 2014-15.
The Senators selected Phillips with the No. 1 pick in the 1996 NHL Draft after his first season with Prince Albert of the Western Hockey League. He returned to Prince Albert for the 1996-97 season, with a midseason break to help Canada repeat as champion at the IIHF World Junior Championship, before being traded to Lethbridge at midseason. Phillips was named the best defenseman in the WHL and helped his new team finish second at the Memorial Cup.
Phillips made the Senators out of training camp in the fall of 1997 and played his first NHL game against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 1, 1997. He earned his first NHL point, an assist, two weeks later against the New York Rangers and scored his first goal against the Florida Panthers on Oct. 30. Phillips finished the season with 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 72 games.
He missed most of 1998-99 with an ankle injury but rebounded in 1999-00 and settled in as a reliable presence in his own zone who could chip in with a little bit of offense for a team on the rise. Phillips had his best season in 2006-07, finishing with NHL career highs in goals (eight), points (26) and plus-minus rating (36) and helped the Senators advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since entering the NHL in 1992. He had no points in 20 playoff games, averaging 23:11 of ice time; the Senators lost the Cup Final to the Anaheim Ducks in five games.
Phillips was durable -- from 2006-07 through 2012-13, he missed a total of three games.
On Feb. 5, 2015, Phillips played his 1,179th game with the Senators, passing Daniel Alfredsson for the most in team history. It also turned out to be his last in the NHL. Phillips didn't play during the remainder of the 2014-15 season, sustained a cracked vertebra during the summer of 2015 while recovering from back surgery, didn't play at all during the 2015-16 season and announced his retirement May 26, 2016. He finished his NHL career with 288 points (71 goals, 217 assists), and 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 114 playoff games.
The Senators retired his No. 4 on Feb. 18, 2020, the third number to be retired by the team, joining Alfredsson (No. 11) and Frank Finnigan (No. 8).
