Cheevers' skating and puck-handling were so good he nearly played forward. But he ended up becoming a two-time Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Fame goalie.
As a junior player with the St. Michael's Majors of the Ontario Hockey Association, Cheevers occasionally played left wing, but was a goalie for most of his five seasons there.
He signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1961, but with Johnny Bower entrenched as their starting goalie, he played two games for the Maple Leafs in 1961-62 and the next four seasons in the minor leagues.
The Bruins claimed Cheevers in the 1965 Intra-League Draft. He played 29 games with Boston in 1965-66 and 1966-67 before arriving full time in 1967-68. He tied for third in the NHL with 21 wins and helped Boston reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in nine seasons.
In 1969-70, Cheevers went 24-8-8 with a 2.72 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in 41 regular-season games, and 12-1 with a 2.23 GAA and .925 save percentage in 13 playoff games to help the Bruins win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1941.
Cheevers had his best individual season in 1971-72, ranking in the top six in the NHL in wins (27, tied for third), GAA (2.50, sixth) and save percentage (.920, tied for fourth). He faced 1,264 shots, ninth-most in the NHL, but the only goalie to face more with a better save percentage was Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadiens (.930).
In the 1972 playoffs, Cheevers had two shutouts in eight games, including 33 saves in a 3-0 Stanley Cup-clinching win against the New York Rangers in Game 6 of the Final.
Cheevers played the next three seasons with Cleveland of the World Hockey Association but returned to the Bruins in 1975 and played five more seasons. He split time with Gilles Gilbert in 1976-77 and 1977-78 to help the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup Final each season, losing each time to the Canadiens. Cheevers had a personal NHL-best 30 wins in 1976-77.
Cheevers retired after the 1979-80 season with 227 wins and 26 shutouts in 418 regular-season games. His 53 wins and eight shutouts in the playoffs are the most among Bruins goalies.
In addition to his outstanding numbers, Cheevers is also remembered for his mask, which featured stitches to show where pucks hit him. He began during the 1968-69 season and periodically added more.
"I was trying to get out of practice one day when this shot that couldn't have broken an egg hit me in the mask," Cheevers told the Hockey Hall of Fame website. "I faked a serious injury and went into the dressing room. I was sitting there having a Coke when (coach) Harry Sinden came in and told me to get back out onto the ice. All the guys were laughing, so I knew I had to do something. I told the trainer to paint a 30-stitch gash on the mask."
Cheevers was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985.
