Barney Stanley moved from behind the Chicago Black Hawks bench to the ice to appear in his lone NHL game as a player on Jan. 18, 1928.

But by that time, he had already done enough to find his way into the Hockey Hall of Fame as one of 33 inductees in 1962.

Stanley, who coached the Black Hawks for 23 games in 1927-28, going 4-17-2, was a star forward for the Vancouver Millionaires of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association from 1915-19, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 1915, before going on to play for the Calgary Tigers, Regina Capitals and Edmonton Eskimos, who he also coached, in the Western Canada Hockey League from 1921-26.

He also played for the Winnipeg Maroons and Minneapolis Millers as a minor-leaguer in the American Hockey Association.

But it was with Vancouver that Stanley made the biggest impact.

He scored seven goals in five games in the 1914-15 season. His first goal, which came in his first game, was assisted by Cyclone Taylor, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947.

In the Final that season, Stanley scored four goals in Game 3 to clinch the Cup against the Ottawa Senators.

Stanleyís best statistical season was 1916-17, when he had 46 points, including 28 goals, in 23 games with the Millionaires. He was also a PCHA Second-Team All-Star in 1917-18, when he had 17 points (11 goals, six assists) in 18 games.

He also has a family connection in the Hall of Fame. Stanleyís nephew, Allan Stanley, was a standout defenseman and a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1960s. Allan was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1981.

Stanley passed away on May 16, 1971. He was 78 years old.
