Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame

Hooley Smith is remembered as one of the NHL's original power forwards.
Smith was posthumously inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972, nine years after dying of a heart attack at the age of 60. He was one of the most ferocious and skilled players in the NHL's first quarter-century.
Smith retired after the 1940-41 season, his 17th in the NHL, as the League's leader in games played (717). At the time he was also second in assists (226), third in penalty minutes (1,062), fourth in points (426) and 10th in goals (200).
He won the Stanley Cup with the Ottawa Senators in 1927 but, according to his Hockey Hall of Fame biography, Smith attacked Harry Oliver of the Boston Bruins in the final game of the series, leading to a one-month suspension.
The financially strapped Senators sold Smith to the Montreal Maroons prior to the start of the 1927-28 season.
It was in Montreal where Smith crafted his Hall of Fame resume.
Smith teamed with fellow Hall of Famers Nels Stewart and Babe Siebert to form the 'S' line, named because of their three surnames. The 'S' line dominated the NHL for several seasons, and the three players combined for 383 points (215 goals, 168 assists) from 1928-32.
Smith had 119 points (54 goals, 65 assists) across 166 games in those four seasons.
Stewart left to go to the Bruins after the 1931-32 season and Smith replaced him as the Maroons' captain. Three years later, Smith led Montreal to its second and final Stanley Cup championship. The team didn't play another game after the 1937-38 season.
Smith, though, was already out of Montreal by the time the team had to shutter its operations. He continued his career with the Bruins in 1936-37 before going to the New York Americans for his last four seasons.
In addition to his on-ice NHL accolades, Smith won the gold medal at the 1924 Chamonix Olympics with the Toronto Granites, who represented Canada. They outscored their opponents 110-3, with Smith scoring 33 points (17 goals, 16 assists) in five games.
