Mrtka was another in a long line of high-end defenseman prospects discovered by Seattle of the Western Hockey League. He was just beginning to grow into his game when he was selected by the Buffalo Sabres with the No. 9 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Mrtka, who signed his entry-level contract with the Sabres on July 15, 2025, began the 2024-25 season with Trinec in the Czech Extraliga, the top professional league in his native country, and had one assist in 10 games. He was chosen by Seattle in the second round (No. 71) of the 2024 CHL import draft and signed with the Thunderbirds on Nov. 27.
After Mrtka was minus-4 and held without a point in his first three games, he had 35 points (three goals, 32 assists) and was plus-14 during the final 40 games of the regular season and three assists in six WHL playoff games. He had seven assists during a five-game point streak from Dec. 14-Jan. 3, and eight points (one goal, seven assists) during another five-game run from Feb. 8-17.
