O'Brien was selected by Seattle Kraken with the No. 8 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and signed his entry-level contract July 3, the first of the 32 players chosen in the opening round of the 2025 draft to do so.
O'Brien has a great role model. His mother, Amy Turek, played three seasons in the National Women's Hockey League and for the Canada national women's team before opening her own hockey school. He showcased a lot of what he learned from his mom in 2024-25, finishing tied for seventh in the Ontario Hockey League with 98 points (32 goals, 66 assists) in 66 games for Brantford, one of his best seasons in junior hockey thanks to a focus on shooting the puck more, which led to134 shots on goal after he had 96 the previous season.
That came after O'Brien was named OHL rookie of the year with 64 points (13 goals, 51 assists) in 61 games.
