Smith once said he felt like he was pretty unpredictable. The defenseman for Tri-City of the Western Hockey League was pretty accurate with his self-assessment and was chosen by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the No. 14 pick of the 2025 NHL Draft.
Smith had 54 points (11 goals, 43 assists) in 68 games in 2024-25. He led the Americans and tied for first among WHL defensemen with four game-winning goals while showing he could run the first power play or penalty kill, finish hits and take charge in transition, helping Tri-City return to the playoffs after a one-season absence.
Following Tri-City's first-round loss to Victoria, Smith played for Canada at the 2025 IIHF U-18 World Championship. His four goals were tied for first among defensemen.
Smith's father, Wade, played for Swift Current, Tri-City, Moose Jaw and Lethbridge as a WHL forward from 1987-91.
