Matt Savoie was selected by the Buffalo Sabres with the No. 9 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.
Being picked early was nothing new for Savoie. He was selected by Winnipeg with the first pick of the 2019 Western Hockey League draft and had seven assists in 22 games as a 16-year-old in 2019-20.
With the start of the 2020-21 WHL season delayed by questions surrounding the coronavirus, Savoie played for Dubuque of the United States Hockey League and made the league's all-rookie team after he had 38 points (21 goals, 17 assists) in 34 games.
