Before being selected by the Detroit Red Wings with the No. 6 pick of the 2021 NHL Draft, Edvinsson first drew attention by helping his team win the prestigious TV-Pucken tournament in his native Sweden as a 16-year-old in 2018-19, when he was named the tournament's best defenseman.
He then signed with Frolunda, and after playing in the under-18 and under-20 leagues, Edvinsson made his Swedish Hockey League debut in 2020-21, getting one assist and averaging 5:48 of ice time in 10 games. He also played on loan that season for Vasteras in Allsvenskan, Sweden's second-tier league, and had five assists while averaging 13:48 of ice time in 14 games.
At the 2021 IIHF Under-18 World Championship, Edvinsson scored four points (one goal, three assists) in seven games to help Sweden finish third.
