Guenther was surprised with a video message from his family during an Arizona Coyotes team meeting Nov. 5, 2022. Coach Andre Tourigny called him to the center of the room to take a Zoom call and he was told he was staying with the team for the rest of the season in lieu of returning to Edmonton of the Western Hockey League
"We just wanted to say that we love you and we are proud of you and everything you have accomplished so far," his mother said in the video posted by the Coyotes on Twitter.
"Congratulations buddy, you've made the NHL," his father followed up.
Guenther proved he made it when signed an eight-year contract with the Utah Hockey Club on Sept. 20, 2024. He then scored the first goal in franchise history on a one-timer from just behind the right circle at 4:56 of the first period to give Utah a 1-0 lead and an empty-net goal at 19:18 of the third for a 5-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at Delta Center on Oct. 8.
Guenther had 35 points (17 goals, 18 assists) in 45 games in 2023-24, incluidng nine power-play goals and four-game winning goals. After Guenther made his season debut Jan. 7, ranked third on the team in points and ninth in the NHL in power-play goals over the final three months of the season. He had 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) for the Tucson of the American Hockey League. He had 10 points (seven goals, three assists) for Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship, scoring 6:22 into overtime to defeat Czechia 3-2 and win a gold medal. He was selected by Edmonton with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 WHL draft, and in 2019-20, he won the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as WHL Rookie of the Year after scoring 59 points (26 goals, 33 assists) in 58 games.
The coronavirus pandemic delayed the start of the 2020-21 WHL season, but when it started Feb. 26, Guenther shot out of the blocks with three straight two-goal games and four in his first five. He finished with 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) in 12 games and had more three-point games (five) than he did games without a point (four).
Guenther also helped Canada win the 2021 IIHF Under-18 World Championship, scoring seven points (four goals, three assists) in seven games.
Those performances were enough to impress the Coyotes, who selected the forward with the No. 9 pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.
