Draft Prospect Award
Eklund signed a three-year, $16.8 million contract with the San Jose Sharks, who selected him with the No. 7 pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, on July 1, 2025, beginning with the 2026-27 season. He had 58 points (17 goals, 41 assists) in 2024-25, leading the Sharks in assists, finishing second in points and tied for fourth in goals. Eklund had a five-game point streak from Feb. 4-24 (two goals, three assists) and got his 100th NHL point when he scored at the Colorado Avalanche on March 6.
Eklund made his debut in the Swedish Hockey League with Djurgardens IF in 2019-20, getting two assists in 20 games.
He became a full-time player the following season, when he was named the SHL's rookie of the year after scoring 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 40 games, something he accomplished while recovering from an emergency appendectomy and a positive test for COVID-19.
William is the second member of his family to star for Djurgardens IF. His father, Christian Eklund, played there for 11 seasons (2001-05, 2006-13). His brother, Victor, was chosen by the New York Islanders in the first round (No. 16) of the 2025 NHL Draft.
Eklund received the 2021 E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence, presented annually to the top draft prospect who best exemplifies commitment to excellence through strength of character, competitiveness, and athleticism.
