Johnson began to blossom during his third full season in the NHL. He had 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) in a 17-game stretch from Jan. 20 to March 10, 2025, to exceed his NHL career highs in goals and points in just 49 games while helping the Columbus Blue Jackets contend for a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
At age 21, Johnson had 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) in 42 games of the 2023-24 season. He signed a three-year, $5.4 million contract with the Blue Jackets on July 27, 2024, despite not playing after Feb. 28 because of shoulder surgery,
Johnson signed his entry-level contract April 8, 2022, after two seasons at the University of Michigan. The No. 5 pick in the 2021 NHL Draft had 64 points (17 goals, 47 assists) in 58 games, including 37 points (eight goals, 29 assists) in 32 games as a sophomore. He had one goal and four assists in a 9-0 win against Michigan State on Jan. 9, 2021.
Johnson scored one goal in two games for Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship before the tournament was postponed due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. He had five points (one goal, four assists) in five games at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
