The Detroit Red Wings wanted Cossa so much, they traded up to the No. 15 pick of the 2021 NHL Draft to select him.
Cossa was the first goalie selected by the Red Wings in the first round since Tom McCollum (No. 30) in the 2008 NHL Draft, and the highest goalie drafted overall by Detroit since Terry Richardson (No. 11) in the 1973 NHL Draft.
But Cossa had a season worthy of that high draft status. In 19 games with Edmonton of the Western Hockey League, he was 17-1-1 and led the league with a 1.57 goals-against average and a .941 save percentage.
