Cossa signed a two-year, $4 million contract (average annual value of $2 million) with the Utah Mammoth on June 30, 2026, four days after he was acquired in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings on June 26, 2026. The deal occurred after he went 26-8-4 with a 2.33 goals-against average, .915 save percentage and five shutouts in 39 games for Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League that season.
The prior season, Cossa won his NHL debut with 12 saves in relief of Ville Husso when the Red Wings defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-5 in a shootout at KeyBank Center on Dec. 9, 2024. Detroit traded up to the No. 15 pick of the 2021 NHL Draft to select Cossa, making him the first goalie selected by the Red Wings in the first round since Tom McCollum (No. 30) in the 2008 NHL Draft, and their highest goalie drafted overall since Terry Richardson (No. 11) in the 1973 NHL Draft.
Cossa excelled in the Western Hockey League in his draft season, going 17-1-1 with a WHL-high 1.57 GAA and .941 save percentage for Edmonton. He first put his name on the NHL radar when he went 21-6-2 with a 2.23 GAA and .921 save percentage in 33 games as a WHL rookie.
He won a gold medal with Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship and played for Team Canada White at the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
