Arturs Silovs was a 23-year-old rookie with nine games of NHL experience by the start of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. After injuries sustained by Thatcher Demko and Casey DeSmith, Silovs entered the spotlight with 28 saves and his first NHL shutout for the Vancouver Canucks in a 1-0 series-clinching victory against the Nashville Predators in Game 6 of the Western Conference First Round at Bridgestone Arena. He stepped up once again with an NHL career-high 42 saves, including 21 in the third period, in a 4-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers in Game 3 of the second round at Rogers Place. Those 42 saves were tied for the second most in a playoff game by a rookie goalie in Canucks history behind Demko's 48 in Game 6 of the 2020 second round; Demko also made 42 in Game 5 of that series against the Vegas Golden Knights.
He signed a two-year contract with the Canucks on July 16, 2024, and was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 13, 2025, for Chase Stillman and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Silovs was coming off an MVP performance in the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs, where he helped Abbotsford win its first American Hockey League championship with a 3-2 victory against Charlotte in Game 6, and his five shutouts were one shy of the AHL playoff record. He competed for 10th-place Team Latvia at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 and was named the NHL Second Star for the week ending March 1.
The native of Riga, Latvia, played most of the 2023-24 season for Abbotsford before being called up to Vancouver late in the regular season and going 3-0-1 with a 2.47 goals-against average and .881 save percentage in four starts. It was a long journey from the beginning of his hockey career with HS Riga of the Optibet Hockey League, also known as the Latvian Hockey Higher League. Silovs was chosen by the Canucks in the sixth round (No. 156) of the 2019 NHL Draft, played for HS Riga, HK Riga in Russia's junior hockey league and Barrie of the Ontario Hockey League.
Silovs signed his entry-level contract with Vancouver on Aug. 23, 2019. He was voted the most valuable player of the 2023 IIHF World Championship for helping Latvia win its first-ever medal (bronze) at the tournament. He was the fifth goalie to be named MVP following Dennis Endras (Germany 2010), Viktor Fasth (Sweden 2011), Pekka Rinne (Finland 2014) and Juho Olkinuora (Finland 2022).
