Protas earned his way into a full-time role in the NHL when he signed a five-year, $16.875 million contract with the Washington Capitals on Jan. 19, 2024. At the time of the deal, he had 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) in 42 games, was tied for second on the Capitals in even-strength points (17), third in assists and sixth in points while averaging 13:02 of ice time.
The forward was chosen by the Capitals in the third round (No. 91) of the 2019 NHL Draft. Protas had 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 58 games of the 2022-23 season and 13 points (five goals, eight assist) in 20 playoff games with Hershey of the American Hockey League to help it win the Calder Cup. During the playoffs, Protas was tied for the team lead in power-play goals (two), tied for second in goals and tied for third in points.
