It didn't take Kochetkov to make an impression with the Carolina Hurricanes. He began his NHL career 3-0-0, becoming the second Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers goalie to win each of his first three games, the 11th in NHL history to win his first three in a four-day span and the first to do it in three road games.
Kochetkov made 30 saves in relief in his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut, a 5-2 win against the Boston Bruins in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round in 2022. Antti Raanta left at 7:47 of the first period after he was hit by Bruins forward David Pastrnak as he was playing the puck just outside the crease. Kochetkov (22 years, 313 days) was the third-youngest goalie in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers history to make his playoff debut, behind Kay Whitmore (21 years, 360 days) and Cam Ward (22 years, 54 days).
Kochetkov was 13-1-1 during the regular season for Chicago of the American Hockey League and helped them win the Calder Cup, when he was 5-1 with a 1.65 GAA and .950 save percentage in six playoff games. He got his first NHL shutout Nov. 14, 2022, when he made 27 saves in a 3-0 win against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Not a bad investment by the Hurricanes, who chose Kochetkov in the second round (No. 36) of the 2019 NHL Draft with the pick acquired in the trade that sent forward Jeff Skinner to the Buffalo Sabres on Aug. 2, 2018.
Kochetkov signed a four-year, $8 million contract with the Hurricanes on Nov. 23, 2022. He set a Hurricanes/Whalers rookie record with a shutout streak of 151:16 that ended during a 3-2 win against the Seattle Kraken on Dec. 15, part of a month when he went 7-0-1 with a 1.63 GAA, .939 save percentage and two shutouts that earned him NHL Rookie of the Month honors for December. Kochetkov became the first rookie goalie in Hurricanes/Whalers history to win at least seven games in a calendar month, surpassing the previous high of six set by Alex Nedeljkovic (6-1-1) in March 2021.
He had two assists in a 3-1 win at the New York Rangers on Dec. 22, 2024, which made him the first goalie with two points in the 2024-25 season and second in Hurricanes/Whalers history (Whitmore on March 30, 1989).
