The No. 13 pick by the Florida Panthers in the 2019 NHL Draft made the most of his first full NHL season with 19 wins to set a record for most by a Panthers rookie goalie in 2021-22. He had two shutouts to join Roberto Luongo as the only first-year players at the position with multiple shutouts in one season. Knight was also the first Florida rookie goalie to win his pro debut and the youngest (20 years, one day) to do so.
Knight signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Panthers on March 31, 2021, following his sophomore season at Boston College. He began with an 11-game personal unbeaten streak and finished 16-4-1 with a 2.18 goals-against average and .932 save percentage while making at least 30 saves in 10 games. He was named a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, given to the top goalie in the NCAA and a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the top men's player.
Knight played four seasons for the Panthers. He was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on March 1, 2025, in the deal that sent Seth Jones to Florida. He was 21-12-8 with a 2.40 GAA, .907 save percentage and two shutouts in 23 games (21 starts) after not playing in the NHL the season before, having entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in February 2023. He signed a three-year, $17.5 million contract with the Blackhawks on Sept. 13, 2025.
In addition to helping Boston College to the 2020-21 Hockey East regular season title, Knight won a gold medal for the United States at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. He was named the United States' top player after making 34 saves to defeat Canada 2-0 in the championship game.
