Pilut played for HV71 in the Swedish Hockey League for five seasons, including scoring 38 points (eight goals, 30 assists) in 52 games in 2017-18, before signing with the Sabres as an undrafted free agent on May 15, 2018.
He arrived in North America the following season and split it between Rochester of the American Hockey League and Buffalo. Pilut made his NHL debut against the Florida Panthers on Nov. 30, 2018, and got his first NHL point, an assist, three games later against the Philadelphia Flyers on Dec. 8.
He finished the season with six points (one goal, five assists) in 33 games.
Pilut played most of the 2019-20 season with Rochester, where he tied for the lead among defensemen with six goals and had 23 points in 37 games.
