Jalen Chatfield validated his commitment to the Carolina Hurricanes when he signed a three-year, $9 million contract ($3 million average annual value) June 14, 2024, in lieu of becoming an unrestricted free agent. He had NHL career highs in goals (eight), assists (14), points (22) and plus-minus (plus-23) in 72 games during the season and two assists in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky praised Chatfield as someone whose "elite speed and tireless work ethic make him an incredibly dynamic player at both ends of the ice."
Chatfield was one of five Hurricanes defensemen who had at least 20 points in 2023-24, joining Brady Skjei (47), Brent Burns (43), Jaccob Slavin (37) and Dmitry Orlov (26). It was the second time in Carolina/Hartford Whalers history (1985-86) with five players at the position to do so.
The undrafted native of Ypsilanti, Michigan, grew up playing for Compuware Triple-A Under-13 team and the Belle Tire Midget Major U18 team. He played three seasons for Windsor in the Ontario Hockey League, helped the Spitfires win the 2017 Memorial Cup and signed a free agent contract with the Vancouver Canucks on March 13, 2017.
Chatfield played three seasons for Vancouver's American Hockey League affiliate in Utica (2017-20) and had one assist in 18 games for the Canucks in 2020-21. He signed with the Hurricanes on July 29, 2021, and won the 2022 Calder Cup as AHL champions with Chicago.
