Niku, a defenseman from Haapavesi, Finland, made his debut in Liiga, Finland's top pro league, in 2014-15, then was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the seventh round (No. 198) in the 2015 NHL Draft.
He remained in Finland for one more season, finishing with 27 points (five goals, 22 assists) in 59 games for JYP before signing a three-year, entry-level contract with the Jets on May 25, 2017. Niku spent most of the 2017-18 season with Manitoba of the American Hockey League, but was called up by the Jets on April 1, 2018, and scored a goal against the Montreal Canadiens in his NHL debut two days later. After the season, he was named the AHL's top defenseman and earned First-Team All-Star honors.
Niku split the 2018-19 season between Manitoba and Winnipeg, finishing with four points (one goal, three assists) in 30 games for the Jets. He battled injuries while bouncing between Manitoba and Winnipeg again in 2019-20.
