Garland was selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the fifth round (No. 123) of the 2015 NHL Draft after leading the QMJHL with 129 points (35 goals, 94 assists) in 67 games for Moncton.
He played one more season with Moncton, scoring 128 points (39 goals, 89 assists) in 62 games, before spending the next two seasons in the American Hockey League with Tucson.
Garland split the 2018-19 season between the NHL and AHL, making his debut in a 5-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Dec. 8. He scored his first NHL goal two weeks later against the Colorado Avalanche, and finished the season with 18 points (13 goals, five assists) in 47 games.
Garland led the Coyotes in goals (22) and scored 39 points in 68 games the following season, and in 2020-21, he led the team in assists (27) while again scored 39 points in 49 games.
He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on July 23, 2021, and signed a six-year, $36 million contract with Vancouver on July 1, 2025, beginning with the 2026-27 season, but was sent to the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 6, 2026.
