Meier played his first seven NHL seasons for the San Jose Sharks. He had 316 points (154 goals, 162 assists) in 451 regular-season games before he was traded to the New Jersey Devils on Feb. 26, 2023 for forwards Fabian Zetterlund and Andreas Johnsson, defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Nikita Okhotiuk, and three draft picks. He had three 30-goal seasons for San Jose including 35 in 2021-22, when he became the first player in Sharks history to score five goals in one game in a 6-2 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Jan. 17. He was the fifth in the NHL to do so since 2000 and first since Mika Zibanejad for the New York Rangers on March 5, 2020.
Meier signed an eight-year, $70.4 million contract with the Devils on June 28, 2023, preventing him from becoming a restricted free agent. He played for Team Switzerland at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, where his six points tied for the most by a Swiss player during a tournament with NHL participation.
Meier was selected by the Sharks with the No. 9 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft after he had 90 points (44 goals, 46 assists) in 61 games with Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and won the Mike Bossy Trophy as the best prospect in the QMJHL.
He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with San Jose on July 8, 2015, but was returned to the QMJHL for the 2015-16 season and had 87 points (34 goals, 53 assists) in 52 games with Halifax and Rouyn-Noranda.
Meier split 2016-17, his first professional season, between San Jose in the American Hockey League and the Sharks. He had 23 points (14 goals, nine assists) in 33 AHL games and six points (three goals, three assists) in 34 NHL games. Meier made his NHL debut on Dec. 16, 2016 and scored his first goal that same game in a 4-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens.
Meier played the entire 2017-18 season with the Sharks, scoring 36 points (21 goals, 15 assists) in 81 regular-season games and had five points (two goals, three assists) in 10 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After the Sharks were eliminated in the Western Conference Second Round, Meier helped Switzerland win the silver medal at the 2018 IIHF World Championship, finishing with seven points (two goals, five assists) in seven games.
He followed that with 66 points (30 goals, 36 assists) in 2018-19.
