Siegenthaler, a defenseman born in Zurich, Switzerland, was taken by the Washington Capitals in the second round (No. 57) of the 2015 NHL Draft after his first full season with his hometown in Switzerland's National League. He played two more seasons in Switzerland before coming to North America for good in the 2017-18 season.
The Capitals assigned Siegenthaler to Hershey of the American Hockey League, where he spent all of the 2017-18 season and started 2018-19. However, he got his first NHL call-up when injuries hit Washington's defense and made his debut with the Capitals against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 9, 2018. His first point came against the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 14, 2018.
Siegenthaler finished 2018-19 with four points, all assists, in 26 games.
He became a regular on defense in 2019-20, scoring his first NHL goal against the Vegas Golden Knights on Nov. 9, 2019, and averaged 15:44 of ice time in 69 games, finishing with nine points (two goals, seven assists) and a plus-11 rating in 64 games.
Siegenthaler was traded to the New Jersey Devils on April 11, 2021 for a conditional third-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract ($1.125 AAV) July 9, 2021. He signed a five-year, $17 million contract extension with the Devils on July 26.
