Mayo's NHL debut with the Arizona Coyotes on Oct. 21, 2021 proved historic when he became the first Coyotes defenseman to score in his first NHL game since Tony DeAngelo on Nov. 8, 2016. Though Arizona was defeated 5-1 by the Edmonton Oilers, Mayo didn't take long to make his mark after signing a one-year, two-way contract Aug. 2, 2021.
That marked the culmination of a long road for Mayo after he played 258 games in the American Hockey League and 25 in the ECHL. He played his previous six seasons in the AHL, scoring 42 points (13 goals, 29 assists) with a plus-8 rating for Springfield and Tucson.
Mayo was rewarded for his strong rookie campaign when he signed a three-year contract with Arizona on Feb. 25, 2022.
