Walman signed a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 6, 2025, an average annual value of $7 million that provided stability in the NHL after he was traded three times.
The defenseman was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the third round (No. 82) of the 2014 NHL Draft, and subsequently traded to the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks and Oilers. He had eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 15 regular-season games for Edmonton and 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 22 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help it reach the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive season, a six-game loss to the Florida Panthers. He was in the middle of a career season with the Sharks prior to trade and finished 2024-25 with what were NHL career bests in assists (33), points (30) and games (65).
Walman signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Blues on March 28, 2017. The Toronto native turned pro following his junior season at Providence College, when he was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, and played 169 games in the American Hockey League for Chicago, Binghamton and San Antonio. As a freshman, Walman helped Providence to the 2015 NCAA National Championship, the first in program history, after finishing a decorated season with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens of the Ontario Junior Hockey League with 33 points (seven goals, 26 assists) in 43 games en route to being named the league's Rookie of the Year.
