Ilya Sorokin has been worth the wait for the New York Islanders. He became a first-time finalist for the Vezina Trophy given to the best goalie in the NHL after going 31-22-7 with a 2.34 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and an NHL-best six shutouts in 62 games of the 2022-23 season. He was third in save percentage and sixth in GAA among goalies to play at least 20 games and tied for third in games played. Sorokin made at least 30 saves in 25 games and was 5-0-2 when making at least 40 saves in a game.
The stellar season earned Sorokin an eight-year contract with the Islanders on July 1, 2023. His 2-0 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 6, 2025, tied him with Glenn "Chico" Resch for the most shutouts in Islanders history (25) and put a bow on a stretch when he was named the NHL First Star for the week ending Dec. 7. He passed Resch with 44 saves in a 9-0 victory against the New Jersey Devils on Jan. 6, 2026, and finished the season with an NHL-high seven shutouts in 55 games to earn his second Vezina nomination. Sorokin also led the NHL in high-danger saves (452) and high-danger save percentage (.864) while going 15-5-0 when facing at least 30 shots, including an Islanders-record 13-0-0 in such games to start the season.
The goalie was selected in the third round (No. 78) of the 2014 NHL Draft. He helped the Olympic Athletes from Russia win gold at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics and won the 2019 Gagarin Cup with CSKA Moscow in the Kontinental Hockey League by going 16-4 with a 1.19 GAA, .947 save percentage and five shutouts in 20 playoff games. He was selected to the KHL All-Star Game five straight seasons (2015-16 to 2019-20), and in 2015-16 was named the best goaltender in the KHL after he led the league with a 1.06 GAA in 28 games.
The Islanders and Sorokin agreed to a one-year contract July 13, 2020. As a rookie in 2020-21, he went 13-6-3 with a 2.17 GAA, .918 save percentage and three shutouts in 22 games (21 starts) in the regular season, sharing time with Semyon Varlamov. He became the first Islanders goalie to win each of his first four Stanley Cup Playoff games with 34 saves in a 5-3 series-clinching victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 of the best-of-7 Stanley Cup First Round.
Sorokin made an NHL career-high 49 saves in a 3-0 win against the Edmonton Oilers at UBS Arena on Nov. 23, 2022. He made 23 saves in the third period and became one of three Islanders goalies with more saves in a shutout (Glenn Healy, 51 on Jan. 16, 1990; Jaroslav Halak, 50 on Feb. 15, 2018).
Sorokin has played for Russia at the IIHF World Championship four times (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), finishing third in the 2016, 2017 and 2019 tournaments. He also helped Russia finish second at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship.
